Whitetail deer hunting during the rut (the periodic sexual excitement of certain mammals), is when you would be more likely to come across the young bucks. As they are still very interested in breeding. The deer, as well as the forest at this time, are very active, and you can experience this kind of liveliness at anytime during the day.

Weather conditons play a big role in deer activity. A storm, or warmer than average temperatures during deer hunting season can definitely minimize deer activity, and a strong wind seems to easily frighten them.
